i know who wins the bachelor.

19 01 2011

Spoiler Alert!
I know who wins the current season of The Bachelor.

A woman came into the store last week and dished out some great stuff.
Her best friend is one of the women on the show this season vying for the attention of 2nd time Bachelor, Brad Womack.

The Bachelor

My wife loves this show.
I’ve watched it a couple times and just haven’t been able to get into it.
I know, I know – I typically love shows filled with drama and this show doesn’t fall short in that category.
A bunch of catty women backstabbing, rumor-mongering and slutting it up. It sounds like the perfect combination.

It’s not bad. (don’t judge me)
But I would rather sit down and watch The OC, Glee or some other teen angst filled drama. I prefer to watch shows I know are completely scripted as opposed to pseudo-reality shows where the producers step in along the way and ask certain people to up the drama.

But it’s been awesome knowing the winner and knowing some of the dirt behind the show.

I still haven’t told Leah who wins. I won’t ruin it for her.
If you’re a fan and want the spoiler then send me a message and I’ll fill you in.

I find it hard to believe that every single person on the show is there because they haven’t found love yet and are sincerely seeking to find their soulmate (while cameras track their every move).

Your goal is to seduce a man (who knows he basically gets to hook up with dozens of hot girls on TV) and prove to him you are meant to be.

Your love story will look something like this:
Arrived on show wearing hottest dress possible.
Tried to be memorable by slapping Brad in the face.
Told the cameras your great sob story and made sure to really play it up to Brad.
Made sure the cameras got a good look at bikini body.
Kissed him (after 8 other girls already kissed him)
Worked out some kind of secret combination to get other girls booted off.
Claimed to be in love after 6 weeks of fierce female competition.

Shame on me for my cynicism.
That does sound like the standard true love story.

Brad is the only winner here.
This is his 2nd time around doing this. He basically hangs out with a bunch of girls who want to “win” him. The first season he decided he didn’t want any of the girls.
Well played Brad. Well played.

This time he chose someone.
Good luck with ______________ . I’m sure you’ll be very happy with her!
(if not, you can always hold out hope for being brought back for a 3rd season)

I’m so lucky to have a great love story. I met Leah back in 2007 and she has been my best friend for years. And now? Well, now I get to spend forever with my best friend. Pretty sweet deal!
“Husbands, love your wives…” (Ephesians 5:25)

? How have you likened the scriptures to your life?

I constantly rave about all of the cool movies or TV shows I watch. I know you’re probably sick of listening to me plug the series, “The LXD” (found on Hulu).

Well, in between shooting that series, one of the guys put together his own little short video.
It’s incredibly well shot and I love the whole concept.
Have a look:

I thought it was so clever to shoot everything with no guns.

Every now and then you come across something that is just well done and is clever enough that it doesn’t need crazy gratuitous violence or sex to help carry it.

This is one of those videos.

“If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.” (Article of Faith 13)

? What’s the best thing you’ve watched recently that was great without having to add in unnecessary sex/violence?

a new season.

26 09 2010

Yes, Fall is rapidly approaching – but that’s not what I’m referring to.
The new seasons of all of our favorite shows are back!

I rarely watch TV shows…. on TV during their allocated time – and we are too poor for DVR/TiVo.

This leaves me 2 options: illegal downloading or Hulu!
Thank-you Hulu for allowing my wife and I to enjoy all the new episodes of our favorite shows while we ate dinner last night and breakfast this morning.

Here’s our top shows at the moment… in a very particular order!

1. Modern Family
2. Community
3. How I Met Your Mother
4. The Office
5. Glee (Glee is number 5 because I have yet to see it still – so it’s bottom tier)

Leah and I noticed something interesting as we watched Modern Family, an ABC show.
In case you haven’t seen Modern Family I’ll give you a readers digest version of the show.

It’s a show about 3 families (all related) and all of the quirky situations that come along with a family in today’s world. (Yeah, I know, it’s a very brief synopsis – go watch the show if you want more)

The brother/son is gay and lives with his boyfriend and their adopted Vietnamese baby. In season 1 they never show the gay couple being affectionate. Not once. It was something we all noticed in season and found interesting.

First episode of season 2 they show the brother (Mitchell) kiss his boyfriends head and briefly hold hands.

Leah and I were talking about how it seems like they’re trying to ease us into gay PDA. (public display of affection)

As I thought about it, it reminded me of this scripture:

“And it came to pass that Amalickiah caused that one of his servants should administer poison by degrees to Lehonti, that he died.” (Alma 47:18)

It’s interesting that often we are lulled along with little things until suddenly we realize we have become desensitized to the big picture.
Just look at what is acceptable on TV now, and what was acceptable on TV forty years ago.
Times have changed a little – but it didn’t happen overnight.

? What’s your favorite show on TV right now?

man vs. wild

9 06 2010

Leah and I have seen each other 3 nights in a row now…

I’m guessing this is what it feels like to be in a relationship?
I love it.

The past couple nights we’ve been exhausted and just sat down and watched Man Vs. Wild.

Have you seen this show before?

You should.

It could pretty much be called “The Ultimate Boy Scout“.

They drop this guy (Bear Grylls) off in the middle of these remote locations and basically he shows you how to survive and make your way back to civilization.

The best part of the show is watching him eat all the crazy junk.

I’ve seen this guy bite right into a snake whose head he just chopped off.

5 seasons of Man Vs. Wild have been produced and everything I’ve seen so far has been fantastic.

I was thinking last night about my time in Boy Scouts when we would take week long camping trips and “rough” it. Although I’m not sure how much we roughed it with our Pop-Tarts each morning.

They should have the scouts watch this guy. I feel like I can be dropped off in a random location (similar to any place Bear has been in the episodes I’ve seen) and easily survive. I use the term “easily” very loosely.

Bear Grylls is not the first person to walk around a dessert, eat bugs and somehow survive.

Nope – there were men who did this same thing long ago.

The original boy scouts…

“And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey…” (Matthew 3:4)

That’s right. John the Baptist.

I’d like to see him go up against Bear Grylls in some kind of Survivor competition…

? Do you think you could survive in hostile environment and make it out alive?

media fast.

30 05 2010

I had dinner last night with my friend Jeremy up in Salt Lake – we are both avid media enthusiasts.

TV. (I have roughly 60 different TV seasons – that is growing at an alarming rate)
Movies. (I have around 400 movies – also a number that is on the rise)

Having an iPhone makes things worse because I am checking all of these things constantly throughout the day.

I work 5 days a week – pretty much full time.

But I have a second job, it’s called “media addict“.

I spend an absurd amount of time watching TV shows and movies, checking my Facebook, watching YouTube videos, etc. etc.

I’m going to try something this week called a media fast. (although it’s probably more of a media diet – but will still be really challenging)

I will not get on Facebook once this week.
I will not get on Twitter once this week.
I will check my email ONCE a day at a prescribed hour (10:00 pm).
I will only get on my computer ONCE a day in order to write my daily blog.
I will not watch any YouTube videos.
I will not watch ANY TV shows this week.
I will allow myself 3 movies to watch this week (only one time per movie) Haha.

Ok- there it is.
The fact that I’m a little sick looking at this list tells me that I really need to do this.

What am I hoping to accomplish?
Well, I’d really like to just see if there is a different feeling that comes from removing ALL the distractions…

Will I finish reading the book I started?
Will I feel the Spirit more?
Will my mind become less clouded and able to focus more clearly?
Will I get bored?

I’m not sure what’s going to happen – but I want to know.

“…nevertheless they are to be used sparingly.” (D&C 89:12)

I know it’s the Word of Wisdom scripture – but I feel like it’s very applicable to anything that we do that goes beyond moderation.

? What would be hard for you to give up for one week?
