Lately, I cannot get enough of Mashable.
If you are even remotely interested in technology/social media this website is a MUST read on a DAILY basis.

They cover anything and everything going on in the online scene.

I’m reading, reading, reading to learn as much as I can so that I can apply everything to our business.

Well, today led me to a website called FourSquare.
You might already know about it or use it (I was a late adapter- I heard bout this awhile ago, but didn’t think it was that cool)

I’ve been convinced otherwise.
Now, I’m convinced it’s the future of social media. (If not FourSquare, then something similar)

Yes, Mashable told me that.
And, I believe it.

Basically it’s location-based social media.
You can “check-in” using your smart phone wherever you go.
Tonight I went to BYU and then to Marley’s (the AMAZING new gourmet slider burger place at the Riverwoods) I opened the FourSquare app on my phone and checked in.

Checking-in allows you to earn points. There are a lot of businesses that will even reward you for checking in to their place multiple times.
It’s basically like having an online rewards card.
I joined today and am hooked.
I checked in everywhere I went today.

Leah still thinks it’s a bit creepy that people can know exactly where you’re at.
A little too “big brother” for her liking.
Me? I don’t care if people know where I’m at all the time.

Maybe I’ll see if I can check in from my bathroom.
You can earn badges for visiting unique places or for accumulating lots of visits.
One of astronauts just unlocked the “Nasa Explorer Badge“!

Imagine Jonah checking in from the belly of the whale…
“And Jonah was in the belly of the fish athree days and three nights.” (Jonah 1:17)

He may have earned the “Bottom of the Belly Badge

? Are you on FourSquare?

the social network.

Leah and I went and saw The Social Network for Family Home Evening last night.

The movie is basically about the creation and domination of Facebook.
It was incredible to watch the story (perhaps a touch dramatized for effect) about something that was created in my lifetime.

I left the theater wondering what the next “big” thing could be.
Leah was probably worried I was getting WAY ahead of myself…
Oh well!

This geeky kid took an idea and made it work.

This kind of thing has happened for generations.
It is happening right now.

Somewhere, in some garage, basement, warehouse, office, car, bus, factory or even bathroom, an idea is taking shape. If the idea is good enough then it will be rewarded.

Why not me?
Why not you?

“I can do all things through Christ, which strengtheneth me.” (Philippians 4:13)

Yeah, we can do it.

? Have you ever thought you had the next big thing?

dr. pepper dance contest.

30 07 2010

A little while ago Dr. Pepper announced a dance contest on YouTube. They had a few well known bboys (Luigi, Kid Daivd and Venum) present some choreography. You are supposed to learn the choreo as best you can and then add a little freestyle of your own onto the end.

Originally I wasn’t planning on doing it.

BUT – I practiced with Shunta Nagano and Johnny Ahn a week and a half ago over at Center Stage and Shunta had learned the choreo…

This obviously led to the other two of us learning it and here we are :

It was a lot of fun to learn (I love the choreo because it’s Kid David’s).

YouTube contests are amazing because you can enter from anywhere! The technology we have is just incredible!

Imagine if we had to do things the old fashioned way:

“And Hezekiah received the letter of the hand of the messengers, and read it…” (2 Kings 19:14)

But it would be kind of cool to send and receive messengers!

? What technology are you most grateful for?

A small change.

13 06 2010

There has been a lot of talk about the media/technology and it’s influence lately. I’ve been thinking about my own habits and how I can l begin to make small changes in order to use the media/technology as a tool for growth and not my spiritual demise.

I was sitting in sacrament and thought about my compulsive desire to download new movies or TV shows to watch along with music to listen to.

I decided that I should use the technology to pick up something worthwhile to listen to.

The Church has a lot of great materials out there – and there are some members who have compiled some incredible resources to pull from.

I picked up a lot of talks from different prophets and apostles and put them on my iPhone. Every week I will listen to one talk as I am driving around. I will start on Monday and listen until the talk is complete.

I LOVE music – and singing along in the car is one of my favorite things to do. I love hearing the new songs that come out – creating playlists to listen to and then just losing myself in the music. But I think it will be good for me to use part of my driving time to listen to something uplifting. I’m not going to stop listening to music, don’t be ridiculous. But it can’t hurt to split the time, right?

For years my dad has listened to church materials on his drive to and from work. He has listened to the scriptures countless times. I always thought he was missing out on all of the new songs on the radio. (I still think that)

BUT – for some reason, I feel like I need to at least test it out for myself. Maybe I will find that I can’t live without my music (then there is a problem – because I am addicted), or maybe I will find that I don’t miss constant bass thumping and will open myself up for inspiration and personal revelation.

Who knows!

It’s a still and small voice that can reveal things and maybe I have been covering that voice up with Justin Timberlake’s voice all these years!

“And it came to pass that while they were thus conversing one with another, they heard a voice as if it came out of heaven; and they cast their eyes round about, for they understood not the voice which they heard; and it was not a harsh voice, neither was it a loud voice; nevertheless, and notwithstanding it being a small voice it did pierce them that did hear to the center, insomuch that there was no part of their frame that it did not cause to quake; yea, it did pierce them to the very soul, and did cause their hearts to burn.” (3 Nephi 11:3)

? What small change can you make to help open yourself up to greater personal revelation?
