milk before meat.

I teach 2 breakdance classes:

The beginner class is filled with young kids. I think most of them are under 10-11. Don’t let their age fool you though, they know how to get down. A couple guys learned this the hard way tonight.

I had 2 teenage guys show up for the Beginner class tonight. They don’t have any experience in bboying. Their mom brought them in couple minute after class, but both boys were adamant they were too good for the kids class. Haha

Have a look at one of my five year-old students, Jewelz.

10 minutes after the 2 teens watched class through the window outside the door opened and the two teens suddenly felt like they might actually need to take the Beginner class after all.

This has happened several times over the past few years. I laugh because I know they NEED the beginner class. I know they are so wrong to assume they can skip the foundation. It’s funny to me because I know I’ve done this exact same thing multiple times in my own life.

In fact, I still do it. I tell Leah all the time I don’t need her help with the “easy” stuff. I’ll just figure it out. I’m always wrong. I need all the help I can get. But there is something about pride that always seems to trick us into thinking we are better than we really are.

We all need the foundation laid first, then we can advance.
“must receive milk because they cannot bear meat…” (D&C 19:22)

? Have you ever tried skipping ahead a few steps and then found out you were totally lost because you didn’t start at the beginning?

free trip anywhere….well, almost anywhere.

I religiously follow the blog, The Art of Non-Conformity.
Hmm, maybe ‘religiously’ is the wrong phrase – since I might actually follow it more closely than I sometimes pay attention in Sunday School.

Anyways, the author, Chris Guillebeau, posted a contest today that is SO worth entering.

He is offering up 25,000 frequent flyer miles.

The 25,000 miles will be redeemed for a round-trip Economy ticket in the winner’s name, valid anywhere within North America, anywhere within Europe, anywhere within Asia, or anywhere within Australia/New Zealand. I’ll select the airline depending on the winner’s preferred itinerary, and it will be a major worldwide carrier (no budget airlines or Southwest tickets here).”

How do you enter?
Just write a comment telling him where you want to go if you get the miles!
Just click here and plan your ultimate vacation.

Where do I want to go?

Well – for several years now I have dreamed of taking an extended “leave of absence“, selling all of my possessions and traveling from country to country teaching breakdance workshops to kids.

The dream?
Travelling, teaching, writing, blogging, photographing.
“Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy.” (2 Nephi 2:25)

I would love to write a book about the impact dance has on kids in different cultures.

I want to go to Cambodia to teach dance.

Where would you travel to?

Thanks Chris, your contest was just what I needed this morning…

? What connections did you find between the scriptures and your life today?

infectious smile.

11 01 2011

Today was long. cold. and kinda eh.
Classes didn’t go so well tonight.
Everyone has off days, right?

I decided to cheer up with a little Sonic.
$.69 cheeseburgers today!

I pulled up to the window and my day was changed.

Some high school girl with braces, acne and the traditional Sonic outfit opened the window with the biggest smile on her face.

Thank-you for being so happy.
Thank-you for somehow smiling brighter each time you opened the window.

You made my day.
“And the heavens have smiled upon her…” (D&C 84:101)

? What do you normally get when you go to Sonic?

the ho down.

I constantly rave about all of the cool movies or TV shows I watch. I know you’re probably sick of listening to me plug the series, “The LXD” (found on Hulu).

Well, in between shooting that series, one of the guys put together his own little short video.
It’s incredibly well shot and I love the whole concept.
Have a look:

I thought it was so clever to shoot everything with no guns.

Every now and then you come across something that is just well done and is clever enough that it doesn’t need crazy gratuitous violence or sex to help carry it.

This is one of those videos.

“If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.” (Article of Faith 13)

? What’s the best thing you’ve watched recently that was great without having to add in unnecessary sex/violence?

sore loser.

18 11 2010

I am a sore loser.

Obviously no one likes to lose – but I don’t handle it well, especially if I feel slighted.

Tonight UVU’s Best Dance Crew Competition.
8 crews entered.

We took 4th.

Oh man.
We should’ve taken second.

I say second because the crew that won was legit. I loved them. In fact I teach one of them. They were amazing. Congratulations to them!

BUT – the 2 crews that beat us.

They didn’t.

In fact the one judge with real dance experience ranked us second but got outvoted by the others.

I’m pissed.
So pissed.

“inasmuch as men do good they shall in nowise lose their reward….” (D&C 58:28)

We did good and got no reward.

Give me one hour to try and learn the routines of the people we lost to and give them an hour to try and learn the things we did tonight.

Sometimes I think bboys don’t get the credit they deserve for the difficulty of the moves…

Ok, I’m good now.
I just had to vent somewhere.
Looks like it’s time to get back to practicing….

? How do you handle losing?

the lxd.

3 11 2010

The LXD.

I’ve mentioned this series before.
It’s incredible.

The series is directed and produced by Jon M. Chu the director of the Step-Up movies.

It’s the age old tale of good vs. evil – but this time it’s all done using dance.
Each character has certain powers (dance powers).

Bboys. Ballerinas. Tap dancers. Krumpers. Trickers.
It’s an amazing combination of dance forms.

One of the latest episodes has the latest batch of LXD recruits taken to a dance school where they are taught to harness the powers they possess!

My wildest fantasies came true on this show.

A school where you are taught to be an incredible bboy with moves so dynamic they are considered special powers.

“And again, the order of the house prepared for the presidency of the school of the prophets…” (D&C 88:127)
Joseph has the school of the prophets.

The LXD has the school of the dancers (with dancing super powers).

? If you could go to school to learn ANYTHING, what would it be?

27 10 2010

I judged my first competition tonight.

Last month I won the “Life Elevated” competition at Muse Music.
This month I was a judge.

“it is given unto you to judge…” (Moroni 7:15)

It’s a small event in a small venue –
but it’s great for the bboy scene around here.

As I sat in the chair next to 2 bboy’s in the area that I have a lot of respect for I had a brief glimpse of what it feels like to “make it”.

In a group of my peers (filled with individuals I admire and respect) I was the given the opportunity to judge, to show that my opinion meant something.

It was a special experience.

? Have you ever felt respected by your peers within a certain subculture?
