march (candy) madness.

8 03 2011

The madness is upon us.
Selection Sunday is this weekend.

I LOVE this time of year.
March Madness!
We are about embark on a journey similar to the children of Israel.
“And they returned from searching of the land after forty days…” (Numbers 13:25)
Ok, well I guess it’s nothing like that journey.

January & February have been slow at the store.
We were brainstorming some ideas the other day during our meeting and my cousin Ty mentioned we need to do a HUGE candy sale. (it’s definitely time to get some of the candy moved out).

Last year I set up a march madness bracket with Book of Mormon characters.
This year?

Welcome to March CANDY Madness-

I broke our candy section down into 4 categories:

I chose the top 16 selling candies and seeded them 1-16 accordingly.
64 candies all vying to be the National Champion.

You can come by the store and pick up a bracket (or print this off and bring it in) and fill it out with which candy you like the best. I will then look at all of the entries and assign each candy points based on how many rounds it made it through the tourney.
The person whose bracket wins the most points (based on how close there bracket is to the general public tally) will win a prize (to be announced soon)

I love stuff like this, so it was really fun to create.
Let me know what you think!

? What candy do you think will win?

dream job.

16 02 2011

Yeah I know I’ve been gone for a couple days.
I had a good reason.

I wasn’t anywhere I could easily hop onto a computer and write up a post.
And I’ve never had much success with the WordPress App on my phone. It never gets things quite the way I like them.

Where have I been?
Oh, no big deal, just the largest toy fair in America.
The New York City Toy Fair.

(yeah that’s Chewbacca, made out of lego’s)

There were thousands of companies that filled up the Javits Center all claiming to have the next big toy for 2011.

Our job?
Walk through all of the booths and determine what we want to bring into the store this coming year.

Play with lots of toys?
Get free swag?
Eat candy?

Yeah, that was pretty much a summation of the past two days.
Did I mention all of this was done in New York City?

I have posted about how cool my job is several times now, but I’m going to do it again because I am seriously SO grateful.
“I am very thankful before God this day…” (Mosiah 7:12)

I spent a brutal year living at home with no success trying to find a job.
Well, now I have a job that I’d like to keep for a very, very long time.

? What is your dream job?

the idea room.

I am CONSTANTLY looking at blogs.
I love finding unique writing styles and designs. It is interesting to see what is popular right now and the trends occurring in the blogosphere.

Lately I have also been on the hunt for prominent bloggers in Utah who are willing to come do a review of the store. (in fact if any of you around here would like to do a review of the store, let me know and I’ll open it up just for you and your friends)

I got in touch with Amy Huntley (The Idea Room).
About Amy:
“I started blogging on a family blog in April of 2008. I began to put more and more of my “ideas” on my family blog to share with others. But I began to fill up my family blog with ideas that I didn’t necessarily want in my family “journal”. So The Idea Room slowly came into existence in Jan/Feb. of 2009.” (Taken from her About page)

I’ve only been following her blog for a couple months now but man it is cute.
I’m not an over the top crafter like some, but I can appreciate legit projects.

Rainbow pancakes!

“I do set my bow in the cloud…” (Genesis 9:13)
*Yes, I found a rainbow reference in the scriptures!

My morning improved drastically after seeing pictures of these this past week.

I got in touch with Amy and invited her entire family to come in and check out our store a couple weeks ago! I opened up early so they could enjoy it without worrying about other customers. I have always loved watching kids come in and just go crazy playing with all of our toys! It’s what the store was meant for!

Yesterday Blickenstaff’s was featured on her blog! It was a lovely post (see here) and less than 24 hours later there were over 200 comments!!!!

Amy knows what she’s doing and has built a solid community through her blog. If you haven’t subscribed yet, go do it.
No, but seriously, right now!
If you have ever done any kind of craft and even remotely liked the process, you will LOVE her blog!

Thanks for inspiring me in my blogging pursuits Amy!

tis the season.

I’ve heard Christmas music playing in stores since Halloween…
To be honest I created my Christmas playlist for my iPod in early October.

But it all feels a little more legit now that we’ve switched our work radio station from 40’s music to the Christmas station.

That 40’s music gets old after awhile.
Christmas music?
Never gets old. Ever.

This is easily my favorite time of the year.

How can you not be happy during Christmas?

The smell of evergreens.
Hot Chocolate.
Christmas Music.
Celebrating the (pretend) birth of the Savior. (He was born in Spring)
“And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger…” (Luke 2:7)

The standard Christmas excitement will be even crazier this year because I work at a toy/candy store!

It’s like I’m working in the North Pole.

? What’s your favorite part about Christmas?

decades of candy.

11 11 2010

We have a pretty good selection of candy here in the store (Blickenstaff’s)

But – that’s about to change.
We’re about have an absolutely astounding selection of candy…

And I’m not talking about every variety of starburst on the market (although I’m a huge fan of the bags that only have red ones in it)

We’re about to become the ONLY place you will find some certain nostalgic candies.

Have you had or even heard of the following ten pieces of candy?

Squirrel Nut Zippers
Goo Goo Clusters
Sky Bar
Mary Janes
Mountain Bar

I had never heard of ANY of these till I started working here.

There is something very fulfilling about being the only store to carry certain items.
I like it.

It’s kind of like the mission.
When you were walking around you knew that you had something unique and special.
You also knew that if people just understood how amazing your “candy” was – they would do anything it took to have some.

Although on the mission we were giving it away.
In the store we’re trying to turn a small profit so that we can all have jobs 🙂

There’s a principle in business that says: when you are the “only shop in the marketplace”, you control the marketplace.

Spiritually speaking, there’s only one shop in the marketplace that offers exactly what we need.

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6)

? Have you had any of those candies mentioned?

dream job.

25 08 2010

Have I mentioned how much I love my job?
Of course I have. Well, I do.
A lot.

I got home from work and went and saw Leah yesterday and we were talking about our days and the convo went something like this:

Leah: There is a lot to get done before we get married. I need to finish up this magazine so it can be sent to press.
Kyle: Yeah, I know. I had a long day too. I bought some sleds for the Christmas. Long day at the office. HAHAHA

This is a typical day for me.
I LOVE it.

My cousin Ty is the man. He has been teaching me everything I could ever hope to know about the buying processes and procedures. I couldn’t have asked for somebody better to learn from.

Today we did our Halloween orders. (If you live anywhere remotely close to the store you HAVE to come by for Halloween. The store is going to have some AMAZING stuff)

We are already doing the Christmas orders as well (hence, the sleds I bought the other day).

There is SO much stuff that needs to be done and I just love being at work. I go in early every day because I am EXCITED to get as much done as I possibly can. Yesterday I worked from about 7:45 AM – 10:00 PM. It was a LONG day but when I went to see Leah she remarked at how happy I seemed.

I just could not be happier right now about my current work situation.

It is amazing to see how your life can change in an instant. In May I was unemployed with no job prospects at all.
Now, I am working a job that beings me (and kids) a lot of happiness.

I’m like Santa, or maybe an elf – or maybe the Candyman.
Well, whatever it is, I love it.

It’s nice to have a job that puts bread on the table and is also enjoyable.

“In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground…” (Genesis 3:19)

? What’s your dream job?

candy fast.

16 08 2010

That’s right, you read correctly – candy fast!

As in, I’m not going to eat a single piece of candy (or drink any soda for that matter) until I am back from my Honeymoon. (maybe longer if I feel up to the challenge)

Now, I know what you’re thinking; “but Kyle, you’re the guy who sleeps with candy right next to the bed. You wake up sometimes and there is candy in bed with you because somehow you ate while sleeping. You work at a CANDY/toy store. You are the candyman!”

Yes. You are correct.
But something was pointed out to me this weekend.

I have put some weight on. (not much – but it’s noticeable)
My buddy Brian informed me I’ve put some weight on. He’s correct! He said eating lots of sugar actually slows the metabolism down. (not good) And, I have not been dancing even close to the amount I used to.
Slower metabolism + low exercise levels = gaining unnecessary weight (as well as being generally unhealthy)

NOT good.

So, the plan is to cut out the candy. ALL of it. No more soda either. Basically I’m trying to cut off the excess sugar. (There is ALOT to cut)

“I, the Lord, have ordained for the use of man with thanksgiving; nevertheless they are to be used sparingly.” (D&C 89:12)

Ok, the scripture is about meat, but it could be said about anything. (well, almost anything)

? What do you do to stay healthy?
